Spider vein are the small tiny vein. They are generally red, purple or blue in color. These are found more frequently on legs, but may appear on face also. It is turning out to be the cosmetic problem as these are unattractive and disfigure the skin.

How are they formed?

It is considered to be the genetic problem. It is more frequently found in adult females than males. It is called spider veins as it generally form web like structure, radiating outward from the centre. In some cases, it may take the form of thin separate lines or the branches of trees.

How are they treated?

Though some natural and herbal treatments are advised, but they are not completely successful alone to cure the problem. Doctor generally uses the fine needle to destroy the veins. Generally lasers are used to burn the spider veins.

Sclerotherapy

The common most treatment for spider vein treatment is sclerotherapy. In this procedure, small needles are used to inject solution into the veins. This injected solution breaks down the spider veins. It not only improves the concerned symptoms but also gives a good cosmetic appearance.

One session of sclerotherapy does not eradicate the spider veins completely but may require multiple treatments. Sclerosant is injected in the veins and the affected leg is elevated so that blood can be drained easily. It generally requires 5-30 minutes to complete one session. The injected sclerosant can engender the feeling of muscle cramp or burning tissue for few minutes. The number of sessions required depends upon the following factors:-

  • extent of spider vein
  • type of sclerosant used
  • number of injections given per session

The risk of sclerotherapy

There are some of the risks associated with this treatment.

  • Change in skin color is the most common side effect of sclerotherapy. It might take 6-12 months to regain back the original skin color.
  • Sometime recurring varicose veins may develop.
  • Bruising, pain, blisters and itching can be observed.
  • A mild allergic reaction
  • Scarring

Laser treatment

It involves the use of local anesthesia, followed by small incision to access the vein beneath the skin. With the help of laser light its entire path is traced. It helps to decide the location of feeder vein. As the entire path is decided, doctors are able to treat the spider veins with the help of intense laser light. The light penetrates vein to eliminate them entirely.

This treatment is minimal invasive and it takes approximately one hour to complete the whole procedure. Redness, swelling and bruising can be observed after the treatment. It costs higher than sclerotherapy but the patient can turn back to his daily normal routine immediately without any hospital stays.
